Authentic Chicken Gyros

Juicy, yogurt-marinated grilled chicken wrapped in fluffy warm pita bread with homemade tzatziki sauce and fresh veggies. A classic Greek street food made easy at home.

Ingredients
  

Chicken Marinade
  • 1.5 lbs chicken thighs boneless skinless
  • 0.5 cup Greek yogurt plain
  • 0.25 cup olive oil
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp cumin
Tzatziki Sauce
  • 1 cup Greek yogurt
  • 0.5 English cucumber grated and squeezed dry
  • 1 tbsp fresh dill chopped
  • 1 clove garlic minced
Assembly
  • 4 pita breads thick Greek style
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes halved
  • 0.5 red onion sliced thinly
  • 1 cup lettuce shredded

Equipment

  • Cast iron skillet or Grill pan
  • Mixing bowls
  • Box Grater
  • Tongs

Method
 

  1. Whisk yogurt, oil, lemon juice, garlic, and spices in a bowl. Add chicken and coat well. Marinate for 1 hour.
  2. Grate cucumber and squeeze out all excess liquid using a towel.
  3. Mix squeezed cucumber with yogurt, garlic, dill, lemon, and oil to make tzatziki. Refrigerate.
  4. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook chicken 5-6 minutes per side until charred and cooked through.
  5. Let chicken rest for 5 minutes, then slice into strips.
  6. Warm pita breads in a pan with a drop of oil.
  7. Assemble gyros with lettuce, chicken, veggies, and a large dollop of tzatziki.

Notes

Marinate chicken for up to 24 hours for best results. Serve with fries inside the wrap for authentic style.
