Ingredients

Pancake Batter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 egg large
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
Decorations
  • 2-3 fresh strawberries sliced for comb, wattle, and feet
  • 1 chocolate chip for the eye
  • 1 hard-boiled egg peeled

Equipment

  • Non-stick skillet or griddle
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Sharp knife

Method

  1. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. In a separate bowl, mix milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla. Combine wet and dry ingredients until just mixed.
  2. Heat a greased skillet over medium-low heat. Pour batter to form a large hen body shape, or pour a large circle to cut out later. Cook smaller pieces for a wing.
  3. Cook pancakes until bubbles form on top and the edges look set, then flip and cook until golden brown.
  4. While pancakes cook, slice strawberries into a jagged comb shape, a small curved wattle, and thin slivers for feet.
  5. Assemble the chicken on a plate: place the wing on the body, add the strawberry comb to the top of the head, the wattle under the beak, and the feet at the bottom.
  6. Press the chocolate chip into the face for an eye, and place the peeled hard-boiled egg directly beneath the tail of the pancake.
  7. Serve immediately with maple syrup.

Notes

Use a squeeze bottle for the batter to draw more precise outlines of the chicken before filling it in.
