Ingredients

The Base
  • 1 medium French baguette or rustic loaf, sliced 1/2-inch thick on the bias
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter melted (or mild olive oil)
The Toppings
  • 1 cup chocolate hazelnut spread like Nutella
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries hulled and finely diced
  • 0.25 cup toasted nuts pecans, walnuts, or hazelnuts, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp powdered sugar for dusting

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Pastry brush
  • Cutting Board
  • Sharp knife
  • Fine mesh sieve

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Arrange the baguette slices in a single layer on a baking sheet.
  2. Lightly brush the top of each bread slice with melted butter or olive oil.
  3. Bake for 6-8 minutes until the bread is crisp and lightly golden. Remove and let cool completely.
  4. While the bread cools, wash, dry, hull, and finely dice the fresh strawberries.
  5. Once the crostini are completely cool, spread a thick, generous layer of chocolate hazelnut spread over each slice.
  6. Top the chocolate layer evenly with the diced fresh strawberries, pressing gently so they stick.
  7. Sprinkle the chopped nuts over the fruit, and finish with a light dusting of powdered sugar using a fine sieve. Serve immediately.

Notes

Do not assemble these ahead of time or the bread will become soggy. You can toast the bread and chop the fruit in advance, but assemble right before serving.
