Ingredients

Apples
  • 4 large apples (Gala or Granny Smith) cored and sliced into rings
  • Vegetable oil for frying
Batter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 0.125 tsp nutmeg optional
  • 1 egg large
  • 1 cup buttermilk or regular milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
Cinnamon Sugar Coating
  • 0.5 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon

Equipment

  • Deep skillet or Dutch oven
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Apple corer or knife
  • Wire rack

Method

  1. In a shallow dish, combine 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon for the coating. Set aside.
  2. Slice apples into rings (about 1/4 inch thick) and remove cores. Pat dry with paper towels.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk egg, buttermilk, and vanilla. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix until combined (do not overmix).
  5. Heat oil in a skillet to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Dip apple rings into batter, shaking off excess, and fry in batches for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  7. Remove from oil and briefly drain on a wire rack or paper towel.
  8. While still hot, toss immediately in the cinnamon-sugar mixture to coat.

Notes

Best served warm. If reheating, use an oven or air fryer to maintain crispiness.
