Golden Custard-Filled Puff Pastry Squares

Ingredients
  

Pastry
  • 2 boxes puff pastry sheets thawed
  • 1 egg for wash
  • 1 tbsp water for wash
Cream Filling
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream very cold
  • 1 box instant vanilla pudding mix 3.4 oz box
  • 0.5 cup whole milk
  • 0.5 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla bean paste
Glaze
  • 0.25 cup honey
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter melted

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a 9x13 baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. Unroll puff pastry sheets and cut into equal squares (approx 12-15 total). Place into the baking pan.
  3. Whisk egg with water and brush the tops of the pastry squares liberally.
  4. Bake for 20-25 minutes until puffed and deep golden brown. Cool completely on a wire rack.
  5. Whisk milk and pudding mix in a small bowl until thickened.
  6. In a large bowl, whip heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until soft peaks form.
  7. Add the pudding mixture to the whipped cream and beat until stiff peaks form.
  8. Slice cooled pastries in half horizontally. Pipe or spread filling onto bottom halves.
  9. Replace tops. Mix honey and melted butter, then brush over the tops. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

Ensure pastry is cold before baking for maximum puff.
