Ingredients

Meat Sauce
  • 1 lb ground beef lean
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 0.5 green bell pepper diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can tomato sauce 15 oz
  • 0.25 cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tsp salt to taste
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
Assembly
  • 8 slices Texas Toast frozen garlic bread
  • 1.5 cups mozzarella cheese shredded
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley chopped, for garnish

Equipment

  • Large Skillet
  • Baking sheet
  • Spatula
  • Chef Knife

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Arrange Texas Toast on a baking sheet.
  2. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook ground beef, onion, and green pepper until beef is browned and veggies are soft (5-7 mins). Drain excess fat.
  3. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and pepper. Simmer on low for 5-10 minutes to thicken.
  5. While sauce simmers, bake Texas Toast for 5-6 minutes (should be golden but not fully crisp). Remove from oven.
  6. Spoon the meat mixture generously over each slice of toast.
  7. Top with shredded mozzarella cheese.
  8. Return to oven (or broil) for 2-3 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Garnish with parsley and serve immediately.

Notes

You can use provolone or cheddar cheese for a different flavor profile.
